On-Site Only — Sorry!

Unfortunately, this puzzle expects you to be on‑site, as teams that travelled over the ocean to reach our on‑site location were given a device specifically designed for the latitude there.

Here's a picture of the device in real life (which we printed on paper and taped to a CD), taken when the hunt started:

By using the device right at the start of the hunt, teams were able to find a phrase that confirmed that they were using the device correctly. To solve the puzzle, teams were instructed to use their device during the next three solar eclipses visible from our on‑site location, at their maximum extent as seen from that same location.

Using the known position of a star at the given times (perhaps by looking it up on a tool such as WolframAlpha or Stellarium) allowed solvers to align the device without having to go outside.

It was such a cool device that we decided to digitally recreate the tool for off‑site teams to fiddle with - drag to rotate part of the tool.
